Like many of us, Tyga has been seriously bored in the house during the coronavirus lockdown.
So when the rapper saw Curtis Roach’s “Bored in the House” TikTok video about eight days ago, he could relate. And like many, many others, he made his own clip, lip-syncing to the now-viral meme.
“When I did it, it was, like, 15,000 videos,” Tyga, 30, tells The Post. “Now it’s, like, over a million in the last week. It’s all types of people doing it. It’s crazy, and it shows you how powerful music is and the internet … how fast everything spreads.”
In fact, Tyga was so hyped on the “Bored in the House” sensation that he reached out to Roach to record a single based on the hook from his “TikTok” video, which dropped on Saturday.
But Roach, a 20-year-old unsigned rapper from Detroit, didn’t pick up when Tyga called. He didn’t recognize the number.
“Then he texted me and was like, ‘This is Tyga. And I was like, ‘Oh, OK, I’ma call you back,’ ” Roach says with a laugh.
Roach re-recorded his “Bored in the House” hook, Tyga added verses and producer Pliznaya cooked up the beat for the single.
“I like doing fun stuff like that, and him being a new artist, it’s cool to do things like that that people really wouldn’t expect,” says Tyga. “He was really surprised how fast I was . . . I’m like, ‘We gotta put it out now.’ ”
Roach had already won by getting everyone from Janet Jackson to Keke Palmer to join in on the “Bored in the House” craze. But getting love from one TikTokker — Chance the Rapper — was extra special. “That was a moment for me, because I’ve looked up to Chance for so many years,” he says.
Although it’s the perfect anthem for the lockdown, “Bored in the House” was actually born in early March, before the country shut down. How did he predict this national mood?
“Honestly, bro, I was so bored in the house,” says Roach. “One day I was bored, and I decided to make a little TikTok about it. A week and half or two weeks later is when, like, everything shut down and everybody was inside . . . I had no idea that any of this was gonna happen. It’s kind of like the stars aligned — for real.”
But even when he’s not self-isolating, Roach says he’s the “homebody” type.
“I honestly love to stay inside and just, like, be in my own little world and make songs,” he says. “I’m already on that wave. Now it’s like everybody’s on that wave!”
