Players make MLB counteroffer in bid to save 2020 season

The MLBPA made a counter-proposal to the league on Sunday in a bid to save the 2020 season, details of which include a 114-game slate, full prorated pay and a $100 million total advance to the players for showing up to spring training, The Post’s Joel Sherman reported.

The two sides have been engaged in shaky negotiations to begin the season in July, and players left last week’s meeting largely disappointed after the league proposed a pay cut scale to help make up for the money lost to coronavirus.

Under the union’s proposal, the players’ $100 million advance for attending spring training would be non-refundable if the season were to be canceled. The players would also receive $100 million in salary deferrals, with interest, if the postseason is not played.

Individual players would also have the right to opt out of playing all together due to the coronavirus.

The season would run from June 30-Oct. 31 if the union gets its way.

The offer also includes playoff expansion for the next two years — two additional teams from each league — which had been included in the league’s proposal.
